How Legalizing Marijuana Will Impact Society

Each of the participants completed a survey of 10 questions; 4 qualitative questions and 6 quantitative. Each participant was asked to write their age, gender and political affiliation at the top of each survey, no names were included. People seemed very open and willing to express their issue on the subject. I distributed my survey in a variety of locations such as a college campus, a law firm, a grocery store and a gym in order to make sure i got a well rounded study group. .
My research findings will focus mainly on my qualitative responses because the answer to those questions give a more in depth view as to whether or not people believe marijuana should be legalized for recreational and medical uses in all states and whether or not they would use the drug if made legal. The first qualitative question on the survey was "Is marijuana dangerous to society, if yes why?" Out of the 30 participants 26 of them believe that marijuana is not dangerous to society. While majority of the non smokers believe it to not be dangerous some of them stated that it is in fact harmful. A 52 and 43 year old Caucasian woman stated that marijuana is dangerous because it "lowers inhibitions" which in turn would cause an increase in crime rates around the nation. A 22 year old African American woman stated that she believes that the legalization of the drug would cause an obesity problem in our nation. Lastly a 26 year old Caucasian male stated that marijuana is dangerous because it causes people to be lazy and lose ambition. As I reviewed the survey after they handed them back I began to ask questions to the people who stated that the drug is dangerous. I asked them if they believed alcohol was dangerous and 4 out of 4 said yes. I then proceeded to ask them if they believe alcohol should be legal 3 of the 4 said no for generally the same reasons why marijuana shouldn't be legal. The second question on the survey was 'Should marijuana be legalized in all states for recreational and/or medical use?' 18 of the 30 participants believed that it should be legalized for recreational and medical use.
