Athetosis results from damaging the cerebellum and is accountable for controlled smooth motion, as well as, the capability of maintaining posture; consequently, a child develops useless involuntary movements which can increase because of stress but may fade away while sleeping. .
The Mosby's Medical Dictionary, states that ataxic cerebral palsy (also caused by damage to the cerebellum) results in stumbles and falls due to poor balance and accounts for about 10% of people with this condition (Anderson, Kenneth, et al 10:6). Depth perception is also affected by this rare type of CP. It is the least familiar kind of CP; in addition, these patients have poor eye-hand coordination. Unfortunately, children with this type of cerebral palsy are capable of having hypotonia (see appendix) and tremors which worsen as they reach for items. .
Hypotonic Cerebral Palsy means less muscle tone "individuals have limp musculature, and are able to move a little or possibly not at all. Individuals with this type of cerebral palsy clearly have "floppy " muscles and cannot control their head; in addition, their arms and legs droop like a "rag doll. " Their joints are lax; they have poor reflexes, and difficulty walking. During infancy hypotonia is commonly found in several neurological conditions which can vary from mild abnormalities to harsh or fatal neurodegenerative or muscle disorders. The children that have severe hypotonia experience problems managing normal cognitive development and motor skill milestones. Sometimes, many children that have spastic cerebral palsy go through a brief period of being somewhat hypotonic early in life "until the full syndrome is presented. .
Mixed types of cerebral palsy are common, which occurs in about 25% of individuals affected by spastic muscle tension and uncontrolled movements. These people contain a small or high amount of muscle tension, as well as, damage to both the cerebellum and motor cortex.
