Sherlock Holmes and Jack Stapleton

Holmes then goes on to make even deeper and more impressive observations of the cane. Holmes corrects Watson on where the stick came from, and then he adds that a dog has been chewing on the stick (9-12). Holmes inferring about the cane is only one of the many ways he shows us his brilliance. Another example of Holmes demonstrating his skill is when he can decipher where the letter to Sir Henry came from. In the novel, Sir Henry receives a letter that commands him to stay away from the moor. In the letter, the words have been cut out of what appears to be a magazine or newspaper, and the word moor is handwritten. Holmes is able to tell the exact newspaper the letter came from. He is also able to infer about the author of the letter. In the movie, Holmes examines the letter very thoroughly. He then says that the letter was most likely sent from an educated man who wanted to appear uneducated. Holmes also states that author of the letter used the newspaper clippings because he might have recognizable handwriting (34). However, Holmes not only uses his sense of observation throughout the story, he also uses his impressive skill of strategy. For instance, after Dr. Mortimer and Sir Henry leave Holmes's office, Holmes notices that a cab is following Sir Henry and Dr. Mortimer. Holmes and Watson follow the cab in order to get a better look at the person inside the cab. However, the person in the cab notices Holmes and they order the driver to speed away. Holmes is instantly upset with himself. Holmes says he should have hired a cab to follow the original cab. He also says they could have waited at the hotel (41). Holmes clearly demonstrates his knowledge of strategy by instantly knowing what he should have done. Another example of Holmes's strategy is we find out he has been staying on the moor. In both the book and movie, Holmes sends Watson with Sir Henry to the Baskerville Hall. Watson and Sir Henry both believe Holmes is staying behind in London.
