Guess Who's Coming to Dinner


            
             The film, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner is a good movie, and reflects society's prejudices of the 1960's time period. This film explores the subject of interracial marriage, and the impact it has upon the parents of the bride and groom. Although, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner is filmed in 1967, its issues of racial tension are still relevant today, making it a worthwhile subject of multi-cultural study even for modern audiences. The problems of race relations, as in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner in 1967, are not seen in political sources, but are seen as individual human problems, which are resolved by individuals. .
             According to this film, Joey Drayton returns home with a guest, Dr. John Prentice after only a short vacation away from her parents. Dr. John Prentice, who is a distinguished African American doctor with a publishing record, too. Joey Drayton's parents, Matt and Christina are please to meet Dr. John Prentice and welcome him into their home, but Joey Drayton's parents hospitality becomes confusion and shock when Joey announces that she is going to marry John. Not only does she want to marry him, but she wants both her parents" approval before she leaves with him for a vacation during which they are to be married. Christina is more tolerant of the idea, after her initial shock, but Matt is tough to convince and he is worried about what people will say to his daughter and about her. Before twelve hours pass, Matt and Christina find themselves hosts to John's parents as well in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. .
             The movie interprets the time period well, especially enlightening the ignorance and tension between African Americans and Caucasians. This movie tells of a dinner party given by a bride's parents of the bride are shocked when they find out that the groom is black. The groom's parents, are also in alarmed to find out that the parents of the bride are white. Surprisingly, the mothers seem to be more accepting of the proposed marriage than the fathers, who are very skeptical, and hold onto old traditions.
