Improving Our Planet's Environmental Health

As the fragile beauty of our earth continues to be forgotten, we must truly ask ourselves- what is more important, our personal needs or the environmental health of the planet we live on? It seems as if we are becoming more and more oblivious to the value of goods and services delivered to us, without being fully aware of its environmental impacts. For that reason, as citizens of this nation we must be aware of the steps we can take to reduce these harmful effects. "Reconnecting with the Earth,"" by David Suzuki creates persuading arguments that allow us to genuinely interpret our world's cry for a better future, beyond our negative impacts. .
Firstly, many people in today's society take advantage of everyday resources. At the same time, they are unaware of the negative impacts that are exposed to our earth. For example, we easily dispose items without questioning if they can be reused or not. Even items such as paper, plastic containers and even grass clippings can all be reused for something else. In the article, Suzuki says that "Even with Toronto's vaunted blue box program the output of unnecessary garbage is enormous " (Suzuki,1). The easy advantages of water and sewer services have also become an issue, especially in urban areas. Some people flush their toilets regularly and pour harmful chemicals down the sink without knowing where the waste will eventually end up. Dangerous toxins found in our drinking sources and beaches that are no longer swimmable are directly related to the negative impacts we inflict on our environment. We also seem to have the same concern with our energy use. Suzuki mentions in his article that "We turn our lights on and off with little thought of where the energy comes from and its environmental costs " (Suzuki, 2). Hydroelectric dams and fossil fuel producing Plants have a big contribution in the destruction of our environment. Despite this, many people are mainly interested in their own happiness and do not stop to imagine how life would be if these things were to disappear or be taken away from us.
