Gender and Language


            "We are all the same", But is this really true? For us humans, are we really the same? In this case when we say "same", it's about the way we talk, the way we communicate, about our civility, our own life style and our emotions. We tend to look through language and not realized how much power language has. Men and women has a very different distinct way of communicating. Gender differences reflected in language shows the differences of people's cultural traditions, thinking modes and values, researches on this issue have practical significances on the construction of a harmonious, successful language communication between men and women. .
             Different dialect and that the best way to describe communication between the genders is in a cross culture format. Its called - " Genderlect theory of Deborah Tannen" . Tannen believes that the best way to describe communication between the genders is in a cross-cultural format. Women use rapport talk to establish meaningful connection with others, while men use report talk to gain status in relation to others. Because women and men use language differently, Tannen suggests they are speaking different dialects, or genderlects. The goal of genderlect theory is to acknowledge and appreciate the language of the opposite sex and achieve mutual respect and understanding. "Our use of language embodies attitudes as well as referential meanings. Woman's language has its foundation the attitude that women are marginal to the serious concerns of life, which are preempted by men." – Robin Lakoff: language and the women's[Mar01][ilo][Cam98] place (1975).
             According to the Aristotle, the Greek philosophers used the terms masculine, feminine and neuter to classify nouns introducing the concept of grammatical gender. Sometimes, there are very clear differences between the forms of grammar typically used by women and those typically used by men.
