Winning by Jack Welch and Suzy Welch

Jack Welch is one of the most iconic business men in the past century. During his more than 20 years as chairman and CEO of General Electric, Welch succeeded in developing what was already a strong company into a global giant that dominated every market it entered. Now retired, Welch delivers a wealth of wisdom for generations to come in his book Winning. The book is written clearly and directly, without any unnecessary business jargon so any reader ought to learn more than just business strategy as an executive; they will learn how to be successful in life. After receiving thousands of questions from audiences around the world, he has compiled them all into one question "How do you intend to win?" His charismatic answer is divided into four fundamental parts: developing the underlying company attitude, managing people, managing organizations, and managing yourself.
Jack argues that the core of a company's attitude is defined by three things: its mission, its values, and the candor of the whole company. He explains that these are often lost to interpretation over time until ultimately the vision for the company is confused with its mission or its mission statement drifts away with each passing business fad. What is your plan to win at your business? Answer that, and you have stated your mission. What behaviors do you plan to exhibit and expect from your team as you achieve your mission? These behaviors will be your company values. .
".integrity is just a ticket to the game. If you don't have it in your bones, you shouldn't be allowed on the field." (p. 14).
How will ideas and information be communicated most efficiently? Every employee from the CEO to the workers on the factory floor must have the courage to speak frankly and openly. When Jack implemented the Work-Out program at GE in the 90's, he was fostering a culture of candor that could generate a whole new spectrum of improvement ideas from every worker, not just management.
