A Study on Compliance

Compliance can be a behavior that is either positive or negative, depending on how it is portrayed. Depending on the application, some might want to understand what lowers or raises the compliancy level of people, while others might be interested on what can alter someone's behavior. For this study, we will define compliance on a scale ranging from one to six, with one being "Very Noncompliant" to six being "Very Compliant". There have been other studies that have also tested and analyzed compliant behavior with gender. Ucho and ,Gbande (2012) conducted a study that was designed to assess the role of personality type and gender differences in compliance with safety work behavior. They found that female workers showed higher compliance levels than males when it came to safety work behavior. Because their study focused on gender and personality, we can hypothesize to have similar results in regards to gender and compliance in our study. A separate study performed by Bushman (1988) tested the compliance level of 150 pedestrians when faced with a female experimenter in three different types of attire (uniform, professional attire, sloppy). He concluded that strangers were more likely compliant with uniform attire as oppose to the other two. With their results we can determine a link between the type of attire worn and compliance levels of people. While their study focused on personality and gender, this study will be examining gender, attire, and whether the experimenter is alone or with a partner. From there, the degree of compliance will be marked according to a scale which is later explained. .
The purpose of this study is to determine whether differences in compliance should exist due to the change in the target's gender, whether an individual or pair made the request, and whether the type of attire played any role in the compliance of the participant. For this study, we will define compliance on a scale ranging from one to six, with one being "Very Noncompliant" to six being "Very Compliant".
