Rhetorical Analysis: Photographing Empathy

For example, the fact stated below one of the pictures that reads, More than a billion people on the planet dont have access to clean and safe drinking water could cause someone to be moved to donate purely out of compassion. Knowing that something can be done to make another persons quality of life better is rewarding for many people. Also, it is possible that the ad could cause one to feel guilty for not donating because it could get them to realize that they rarely even think to appreciate things like clean drinking water simply because of the fact that it is abundant. Despite which emotion is invoked the emotional appeal is the most persuasive appeal in this advertisement and because of that, the purpose of this advertisement, which is to get people to give money, is cogently accomplished. The authors combination of a fact stated with pictures that could cause someone to feel empathy towards the people the charity wishes to provide with clean water effectively conveys to the audience the advertisements message.
A crucial part of the delivery of the message of this advertisement is in the fact stated below the pictures. The fact is important in determining the context and meaning of the pictures. This fact basically gives the audience a reason to respond emotionally to the photographs above it. The fact again states that, More than a billion people on the planet dont have access to clean and safe drinking water. There are about seven billion people on the planet so that means that over one seventh of the planet does not have access. If an American, for example were reading this ad, this fact would most likely come as a huge shock to them because the great majority of the people in the U.S. have very easy access to clean drinking water. Ideally, this would cause that viewer to think of what it would be like if that convenience was no longer available, leading them to feel sorry for those who dont have it.
