CRIME AGAINST WOMEN.
This incident is a clear reflection as well as a reminder of the increasing crime against women. Rape is perceived to be one of the most common crimes against Indian women/girls. Numbers of rapes are increasing each year as reflected in the statistics by National Crime Records Bureau (2012). As per the records the number of rapes in 2011 were 24,206 while in 20112 it increased to 24,923. Raping of women/girls is depicted as the fastest growing criminal activity against women according to National Crime Records Bureau (2011).
In such a scenario going out to relieve oneself at night is a matter to taking risk, however is there an alternate option? .
SEXUAL VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN----gender inequality .
Rape which is a form of sexual violence is an important facet when talking about "discriminatory violence" against women. There is no doubt that man/boys are also raped however the majority of the cases are of women/girls (UN Declaration, Elimination of Violence against Women).
Rape is both a "CASUSE" as well as "CONSEQUENCE" of gender inequality that is still present in our society. .
As per feminist scholars male-on-female violence could be elucidated by gender relations. Further the social along with institutional settings of gender inequality could create a "social climate" that either sanctions or limits the violence by males towards women (Daly & Chesney-Lind, 1988). The author would like to relate this specifically with the Mulayam Singh Yadav's reaction to the rape case in which he said "Boys will be boys. They make mistakes". Such responses enable the violence to continue, it is an excuse to continue violence against women.
