The Cinematic Power of IMAX


            Throughout the history of film, the main goal of producers, directors, actors, and anyone else working on a movie, was to captivate audiences. Whether it was through a great story or dazzling actors and actresses, movies were made to make money, bringing people to the theatre and hopefully putting a good product in front of the masses. As time has gone on, the movie industry has changed drastically, as well as the way people watch movies. Now like never before, movie companies are creating a movie-going experience unlike any that has ever happened, this is through the likes of IMAX and IMAX 3-D viewing. IMAX, which is an abbreviation for Image MAXimum, has changed the way we watch movies since its technological development and arrival to the movie industry. This new system has taken away the importance of the story of a film, instead focusing on the excitement, visuals that will truly leave a lasting image in the minds of moviegoers. Through the visual advancements in technology that have made IMAX and 3-D possible, the movie industry has been revolutionized, and with progressing technology, will continue to change the way we see movies. .
             In 1967, the World's Fair came to Montreal, Quebec in the form of the 1967 International and Universal Exposition, of Expo 67 (IMAX.com). Investors and executives came from all over the world to see the newest equipment and submit their inventions with the hopes of making it big in the world of technology. Present at Expo 67 were Graeme Ferguson, Roman Kroiter, and Robert Kerr viewed Expo 67 films Labyrinth and Polar Life. These films used a multi-screen formatting, which created a bigger, clearer, more realistic image that put viewers closer to the action than ever before, inspiring them to take this new format and revolutionize it. The three knew that the technology for this kind of product did not exist, so they sought out engineer William Shaw in 1968 to join the official IMAX Corporation.
