Evil is the disease in Macbeth's mind that is causing his sanity to decay and is making him become a terror for everyone in Scotland during his reign. The destructive protagonist, Macbeth, is a tyrant in the play for the reason of him killing innocent victims to get his way, especially King Duncan, his best friend, and lastly his fellow thane's family. In The Tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespeare, he uses darkness to represent unnatural and evil found all over the play.William Shakespeare also includes the hideously evil witches into the play purposely to entertain King James I's fascination with witches. Macbeth in real life was actually a great king, but Shakespeare knew that a play about a thane killing his king to get into Scottish royalty would not sit well with the recently crowned King James. Macbeth allows himself to becomes accustomed to getting his way through murder and then lets the evil seep through him like a plant needing sunlight to live.The tragic hero's impending death made the audience pay attention when the play is being performed. There is an obsession with mortality because at that time, and still today, death intrigues people to watch. Darkness and night both exemplify the image of evil and the tone for the play. The obscurity of night conceals all the underlying burdens. When major confessions are confessed many of them happen in the witching hours causing many people, like Lady Macbeth and Macbeth, to lose sleep over such tragic confessions. Macbeth evoked on himself when he spoke to the witches earlier that day. In the end, Macbeth knows that he will be punished for his dark actions because his heart,which is beating blood inside a coward, turns into stone leaving him dispassionate. That is one of the reasons why when Lady Macbeth passes away Macbeth does not contribute any emotion to it because his mind is never in the right place anymore. At first Macbeth is certain that murder will guarantee a place in the Scottish hierarchy, but the acts of murder causes a snowball effect to happen.
