Dreams Deferred - Langston Hughes

We had even picked out the house" (Hansberry 44). This shows that buying a house in Morgan Park has been a long time dream of hers, stemming back to when her husband was still alive. She also goes on to say, "But Lord, child, you should know all the dreams I had bout buying that house and fixing it up and making me a little garden in the back-And didn't none of it happen" (Hansberry 45). This alludes to the fact that regardless of the effort made, Mama's dream still hasn't come true and is at risk of drying up like a "raisin in the sun." This is probably why she feels this is the perfect time and opportunity to buy the house and fulfill, perhaps her biggest dream. While Mama's dream may not sound unrealistic, they are for the simple fact that she's already made an agenda pertaining to how she wants to spend the money. Part of that agenda was putting money away for Bennie's tuition. That was made clear in a conversation with Ruth, when she says, "Some of it got to be put away for Beneatha and her schoolin'-and aint nothing going to touch that part of it. Nothing" (Hansberry 44). Another person that comes into play is Walter, of course. Confident that his investment will be profitable, he expects to receive the money to do so. Between the new house, Bennie's tuition and the liquor store, $10,000 will only stretch so far. In a sense, Mama's dreams are becoming nonexistent because after the check is spent, the family has no other means of attaining their goals. Walter's job doesn't pay enough, Ruth and Mama don't bring in the extra necessary to put aside for a house, and Bennie is not willing to marry rich solely for the financial benefit of her family. I was happy with the fact that Mama went ahead with buying the house because at least her of her dreams could be real. However, it was ironic that only from her husband's death was she able to make her dream come true.
Ruth is a simple woman who only wants for her family to be happy and not worry about money all the time.
