Biography of Michael Phelps


It consisted of the United States 4x100 freestyle relay defeating the French even though they were major underdogs in that event. Phelps led off the relay in an almost American record time with the 100 freestyle being one of his weaker events, and concluded with Jason Lezak running down the world record holder at the time from France to win the gold medal. In chapter four the 200 butterfly, Michael's goggles completely filled up with water to the point that he could not see anything. Instead of giving up and blaming a possible failure on a goggle malfunction, he ignored it, relied on his training and stroke count per lap, and won another gold medal. The last of Phelps's individual events was the men's 100 meter butterfly. A Serbian by the name of Milorad Cavic had set an Olympic record in the semi-finals of the race, and prior to, had been trash talking about how he could beat Phelps in the race. Using all of media publicity by Cavic as motivation, Phelps out touched him at the end by .01 of a second. The biography concludes with the United States winning the 4x100 medley relay which Phelps was a part of leading him to his record setting eighth Olympic Gold Medal. He finishes by reflecting on all of the work and sacrifices that he made throughout his career to make all he had accomplished possible. Having to turn down invites from friends on a Friday evening because of practice early Saturday mornings, and not doing things that other people who weren't in his position such as playing pick up basketball games for fear of a twisted or broken ankle, and bowling because of the risk of blowing out his back or wrist are some of the many examples of things that he had to give up, which required extraordinary discipline. .
