Slavery and the Second Party System

During the 1850s there were many different views on slavery as how to deal with the pressing issue. One of these different outlooks on slavery occurred in Kansas, where the question was whether the new territory would be slave owning or free which erupted into violent and political turmoil. Bleeding Kansas was the treatment of runaway slaves and several other issues involving slavery that stressed and eventually crushed the United States two party system that was in place for a generation to mold sections and ideals into two dominant national institutions. .
While slavery was a key factor in the tumultuous end of the Second Party System, the Republican Party had a large influence on the end of the Second Party System. The success of the Republican Party came with their stance on slavery; they opposed the expansion of slavery and called upon congress to make changes to eventually prevent slaveries expansion and extension of life. The Republicans categorized slavery as an immoral and barbaric way of life. They felt if confining slavery within its current boundaries that this institution and way of life would slowly suffocate and cease to exist. Republicans did not associate with the abolitionist because Republicans recognized the legitimacy of the fugitive slave clause of the Constitution and accepted the clause's enforcement and laws. With that they separated themselves from the abolitionist who strived for a quicker and prompt end of slavery. So with all this the Republicans may have come form the Whigs and different ideals but in the end turned into a genuine anti slavery party. The Republican's opposed the expansion of slavery and allowed for a unique moral protest against the institution as a whole. But they were not just looking out for the blacks but specifically themselves. Creating a racial concern that the new territories be reserved predominantly for the free whites. Overall the Republicans played a role in the end of the Second Party System by attempting and successfully slowly suffocating the South's slavery institution.
