Clothing Symbolksm in A Doll's House

In Genesis 3:7, after Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit, their eyes are opened and they begin making clothes for themselves. People then began wearing clothes as a way to express their freedoms. Some places regulate what is to be worn while other places do not. One could say that by regulating what is worn, one is restricting peoples freedom. This can be seen through the play A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen. Ibsen's protagonist, Nora Helmer, is constantly being restricted in her freedoms by her husband, specifically in her choice of clothing. Within Henrik Ibsen's play, A Doll's House, Ibsen uses the symbolism of clothing to illustrate freedom.
Nora Helmer, is treated as if she were a child or plaything by her husband, Torvald Helmer. Torvald controls what Nora does by limiting many aspects of her life. One of these aspects is how she dresses. In Act One when Nora is asking for help on a costume for the upcoming party she asks her husband: "I cant hit upon anything that will do; everything I think of seems so silly and insignificant". Nora is so used to her father and husband telling her what to do that she cannot use her own ideas. Torvald replies to her statement: "Does my little Nora acknowledge that at last?" Ibsen illustrates Nora's lack of freedom because of her husband who regards her as a child by dressing her. Ibsen uses Torvald's constant control of putting Nora down, along with having Torvald choose what his wife will wear to show clothing symbolizing freedom. .
Torvald chose the dress Nora was to wear as she danced the Tarantella. The Tarantella is a dance where one dances frantically, as to remove the poison from a tarantula. The poison, that Nora is trying to rid from her life is her marriage and husband. In Act Two, Nora asks for Torvald's help when practicing her dance. When she starts to dance he shouts: "Slower, Slower. Not so violently, Nora!" Torvald doesn't like the way that his wife his dancing, and so he will control her.
