Institutional Forces of Unionism

the context of the years 1893 1998, how justified is the claim that the 1998 GFA was essentially just another victory for the political and institutional forces of Unionism? .
For years the British and Irish governments have sought to find a peaceful settlement for the long history of violence occurring in Northern Ireland. After many attempts to reach a settlement, the consensus of both governments and the Northern Irish MPs allowed them to construct the 1998 Good Friday Agreement (GFA) also known as the Belfast Agreement. It attempted to tackle the political and institutional issues of the island by restoring the Northern Irish government and providing an Executive committee in which unionists and nationalists would share power. The agreement also gave provisions on human rights, policing and decommissioning, these ensured that nationalists gained equality and could no longer be faced with discriminatory laws. Though hostility still occur between the Nationalist and Unionist communities, the GFA is the first in several attempts to officially bring about the end to the Troubles. Dixon argues that The Good Friday Agreement had been achieved in spite of the fact that Northern Ireland appeared to be more divided in 1998 than it had been in 1989 This is true to some sense as the majority of the population was tired of the unceasing violence. However I believe the ceasefires held by the paramilitaries and the alacrity of conflicting political parties to support the agreement allowed it to take place. Thus I believe that the GFA was victorious for Nationalists as it was the first historical document that gave Catholic/Nationalists concrete advancement, Unionists finally knew their place and were compelled to compromise. .

The war of religion between Catholics and Protestants in Ireland dates from the Jacobean era, where King James planted Protestants into Ireland in attempt to have loyal English crown in the Catholic country.
