The Power of Literature

As this society shifted itself farther and farther away from English and its literature, its importance was forgotten. When Jimmy went on to higher education, he was accepted into a liberal arts college that "was falling apart " (185). This world was letting literature and art slip away from it. The liberal sides of studies were put on a back burner and forgotten about. Importance was now only found in numbers and what science could do to advance the human race. Children in this world are raised being taught that they will get nowhere in their life if they are not good with numbers. The similarity between this aspect of the book and the reality of the world today is shocking. In the world today children are taught that they will not get anywhere with liberal studies. Atwood's work stands as a plea to stop this degradation of the arts and humanities. .
Certain knowledge is lost when people only care about numbers and science. There is no longer any meaning to the words that are read. An individual in this world could not spot the difference between real and made up words in the advertisements for products that they were purchasing. Jimmy, after graduating from his college, landed a job with the advertising company "AnooYoo " (248) and was put in charge of creating the promotions that would catch their consumers' eyes. "Once in a while he'd make up a word " tensicity, fibracionous, pheromonimal " but he never once got caught " (248). Atwood hints at the great loss that the world will suffer as it continues in the direction that brushes liberal studies off to the side. Individuals in Jimmy's world have lost so much information concerning their language that there is no notice of the fictional words slipped into the advertisements of their everyday items. The similarity between Jimmy's reality and the advancement of the world today is almost frightening. .
In the present parts of the novel there are individuals, known as Crakers.
