Three Good Women

There are many themes of Middle English literature that are very prevalent in the many narratives surrounding King Arthur and the court he leads, which contributes heavily to the category we know as Middle English literature, but chief among them are considered to be courtly love and religion. However, the evil portrayal of women is a theme that is just as dominant in the literature of the time and is one that should always be examined for the problematic certainty that it is presented with. The absurd idea that all women are dangerous and reason for the ruin of men branches from the idea that they are the direct and therefore influenced descendants of the first woman to ever be perceived as evil: Eve. The women of "The Wife of Bath " and "Noah's Flood " fall in perfect alignment with this theme as their independent thinking is perceived not as a quality that should be praised for its radicalness, considering the culture of the time, but instead is shamed and used as evidence of women's evilness. At first glance and with the most shallowness of analysis it can be assumed that these women are "bad women ", especially when set up against the woman of "The Clerk's Tale " whose submissiveness was often celebrated and elevated as something all women should strive to emulate. The standard set to consider the "goodness " of a woman in this time period, then, must be her level of subscription to the patriarchal society in which she lives as well as her awareness of her role as woman in relation to that of a man. .
It is no secret that there was an extreme inequality amongst men and women in the medieval period where middle English literature resides. In fact, women, in most cases, were considered to be more valuable as property to be bought and sold " although most would not use such candid language to describe the marriages and relationships between women and men " and not as the respectable humans that they should have been regarded as.
