The Warning Signs of Diabetes


            Diabetes is a medical condition that has reached epic proportions in the United States. There are more than 25 million people living with diabetes according to the American Diabetes Association, and one third of those people are unaware that they are diabetic (Innes, 2012). More than one in three adults has prediabetes, which is where their blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes ("Diabetes Latest| Features | CDC," 2014"). Meaning if they don't make healthy changes in their lives, they will develop diabetes. .
             Diabetes mellitus is defined as a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood sugar ("Diabetes Definition - Diseases and Conditions - Mayo Clinic," 1998). Glucose is vital to your health because it's an important source of energy for the cells that make up your muscles and tissues ("Diabetes Definition - Diseases and Conditions - Mayo Clinic," 1998). It's also your brain's main source of fuel ("Diabetes Definition - Diseases and Conditions - Mayo Clinic," 1998). A person diagnosed with diabetes, whether it is type 1 or type 2; has too much glucose in their blood. Too much glucose in one's bloodstream can lead to serious health problems ("Diabetes Definition - Diseases and Conditions - Mayo Clinic," 1998).
             Chronic diabetes is categorized into two groups' type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body's own immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas, called beta cells (Type 1 Diabetes: Causes, Tests, Symptoms and Treatments," 2005). The other type of diabetes, type 2 is the most common form of diabetes in Americans (American Diabetes Association, 1995). This form of diabetes occurs when your body does not use insulin properly (American Diabetes Association, 1995). .
             Diabetes causes six deaths every minute and one in 20 deaths in the world is due to this condition ("Top Ten Facts about Diabetes | Medindia," 1997).
