The Genesis of East Asia: 221 B.C.–A.D. 907

The main aspect that people embraced was the way they spoke to one another. China was one of the first in the region have a language that most people can communicate with. This establishment of language was picked up in different countries as well. Holcombe view on China as the leading country for the development of Asia helps us in unifying Asia. The author also acknowledges that China develops writing that spreads throughout Asia. This allows the reader to understand that China had a big influence in developing East Asia as a whole.
The author has many methods in getting his point across. One big method Holcombe has is using China's history as a way to show that most of East Asia came from China practically. This method works really well for him because the history he speaks about are facts and the land parts he is talking about also shows that East Asia came from China. The history aspect reassures the reader that what he is reading is not made up. It enables the reader to view China in a higher level or give more importance to. The problem with this method is it does not give significance to many other countries. Another method Holcombe uses is always is coming back to China. Even when the author mentions other countries like Vietnam, Japan, and Korea the reader always finds information on China. In the section, Becoming Japanese (Holcombe 194), Holcombe explains the differences in Japan to China. Holcombe shows how opposite Japan was compared to China. He still finds a way to bring back China even when explaining a different country. This method is very effective because it provide the reader the ability to go back to the main point the author is trying to make. .
In the book Holcombe also explain many different theoretical propositions. One proposition he makes is that due to East Asia, Europe got its name. This seems creditable because he explains how Europa was the lady that gave her name to Europe, and she was from Asia (Holcombe 2).
