Yet, the meaning of Thanksgiving Day is all about celebrating the land that our ancestors pioneered, while completely ignoring the fact that those ancestors engaged in a battle against those that have been living in the same land for hundreds of years before that. Not too long ago, I read about the Slaughter of the Buffalo. We teach and commemorate the Civil rights movement and racial discrimination, and I believe the history of the Native Americans should be emphasized as just as important piece of history. The spirit of pioneering and the American patriotism is at times uncomfortable for the above reasons. .
The second aspect that poses inconvenient truth is patriotism, particularly since 9.11. There is a heavy emphasis on patriotism and security in America. People are scanned and screened at every official location, airport for example. Anything we do can be caught on surveillance camera or anything we say may be recorded. There is a limitation to how much terror can be prevented with force and restriction. What can be done with terrorists that are from within, as it was with the Boston Marathon? The person who committed terrorism at the Boston Marathon was an individual that had social and mental complaints. Patriotism is a great thing, but when it is interpreted wrong, it will only benefit the conservatives in the political party. As a result, it may not have anything to do with terrorism itself. .
Another inconvenient truth is the social structure that allows people to purchase and own firearms. Under the name of the individual rights, individuals are allowed to bear arms for their own safety. I have my background in growing up in another country-South Korea. I was born in South Korea and raised in that country until I became an adult. Are firearms regulated and controlled in other countries because they don't allow rights to private property? Not so. Guns are weapons that can destroy and kill humans, not private properties like diamonds or cars.
