Enzymes and Food Production


            Enzymes are an invaluable component to a nearly endless list of reactions that take place everyday. Without enzymes constantly working and allowing things that are easily taken for granted to occur. They occur naturally in the human to help in the process of many reactions, they occur in nature, they are used in industry and they occur within household items. Without enzymes we would not only be lacking many of the products we buy but also the food we consume, and even the bodies ability to digest. Enzymes are used so widely in industry that they are the reason we can have many of the products we have today. Without enzymes, the production process for many of these would be much more complicated and time consuming. Without question they are one of the most useful and important tools used in industry today.
             Enzymes are used in the production of many things. So many that most may come as a surprise. The food, pharmaceutical, cleaning, pulp and paper, and textile industries all use enzymes to create or process products. Without enzymes the quality of our clothes wouldn't be the same as what it is now. The medical industry uses enzymes not only as medicine but to create different medicines using their catalytic properties. Enzymes are used in the food industry to aid in the fermentation of alcohol, the curdling of dairy products to create yoghurt and cheese, and to create corn syrup which is a widely used sweetening agent. These are some of the simpler uses of enzymes in industry but they are used in many others as well.
             Enzymes are be used to aid in many production processes. In the medical field they use enzymes such as prolactazyme, which breaks down dairy products, as enzyme supplements to treat specific enzyme deficiencies. A person who is lactose intolerant can take a prolactazyme supplement to properly digest dairy. They can also be used in diagnosis by manipulating the enzymes so they are specific to a selected substrate.
