The Hero Myth in Ferris Bueller's Day Off


            In the movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," there are many characters like Ferris, Cameron, Ed Rooney, and Jeanie that go through the hero myth cycle. These characters propel the storyline of the movie forward with respect to the three main parts of the hero myth cycle which are; separation, transformation, and return. Even though all these stages aren't met by each of the characters, characters are created to move along the plot lines of the other characters. Not every character in the film completes their own cycle. However, in this movie the characters of Cameron and Ferris accompany each other on their journeys through the stages of separation, transformation, and return. At the end of the film, both of their cycles are completed.
             In the first section of the hero myth cycle, separation, our hero is called to an adventure that he may or may not refuse. Before the character decides what to do, he must seek the advice of a mentor in order to decide what path is right for him to take. Once the character decides which path to take, they get help from their trusty companions as they enter the world of the unknown. In the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off, we are introduced to Ferris' friend, Cameron. He is on a journey toward self fulfillment. Cameron is the type of person who is uptight and likes everything in certain way so he doesn't experience an anxiety overload. Cameron's journey starts when his friend, Mr. Ferris Bueller, calls him up. Mr. Bueller asks Cameron to join him on one last fling in Chicago before they graduate from high school. Cameron, knowing that it's a bad idea, decides to refuse Ferris' offer by claiming he is sick. Cameron finally gives into Ferris, but before he drive over to Ferris' house, Cameron mentally contemplates whether or not to join Ferris in his adventure. .
             When Cameron finally chooses his path, he helps Ferris get his girlfriend, Simone, out of school. This allows them to continue on their journey even though they are taking Cameron's dad's precious car to Chicago.
