Fashion Advertising - Tom Ford International


            Tom Ford International is an expanding powerhouse in the fashion world. This company is a high-end, prestigious men's and women's clothing business. This design company is most likely known to the public by its risque' and sexually explicit ads. These ads have a lot more to them than what meets the eye, including subliminal messages used to sway and contort the viewer's way of thinking. Many of them portray a sense of power and sexual gratification. Vogue actually stated that Tom Ford almost religiously portrays the messages of sex, power, and decadence in all of his careers work (Tom Ford). This is an increasingly dangerous marketing ploy due to the fact that it inspires the idea of instant gratification sexually, monetarily, and in any matter of everyday living. .
             According to Vogue Tom Ford dropped out of NYU after only one year, but enrolled in Parson's School of Design after some time (Tom Ford). After graduating from Parson's he became employed as women's and menswear creative designer at Gucci, and soon became the head of design (Tom Ford). From there it is off to the races. Awards and fame with Gucci, but it was not enough for the power-hungry designer and soon to be mogul. Ford left Gucci and moved on to his self named company Tom Ford International. In the year of 2007 the first storefront was opened in Manhattan (Tom Ford). From even before the first store was opened, Ford's viciously sexual marketing ploys were already in effect. This is no surprise, for even Vogue states that "Ford's highly sexualized take on sixties and seventies silhouettes has been, in part, responsible for his astounding success " (Tom Ford). He is a genius when it comes to making money and designing clothes, but his advertisements deliver beyond morally unsound messages. Although this is no worry to him, for he is raking in the money. In fact, it was stated in a Business of Fashion article by Imran Amed that Tom Ford International is "projected to soon turn over $1 billion a year at retail " (Amed).
