Religion Overview - Islam

Islam was a fast spreading religion in a time when Christianity and other religions had already established themselves. Muslims, who are the followers of Islam, consider their religion as a religion of reward, equality, and protection. For Muslims, God is unique and without any equal. They attempt to think and talk about God without making him into a thing or picturing him as something as in human kind. The Qur'an, which is the sacred text of the Islamic religion, avoids projecting an image of God by addressing him in different pronouns avoiding believers to create any physical image of him. Muhammad is considered by Muslims to be the last of the continuing chain of prophets. He was chosen by God (Allah) to restore the true religion. Muhammad was born into a poor clan of the Quaraysh tribe in 570 C.E. His father died before he was born and his mother died when he was six, he became an orphan at a really young age. He was then given to his uncle who then put him to work as a shepherd. Muhammad's life stories, teachings and sayings are persevered in literature called the Hadith. Muslims are not to worship Muhammad because their faith only resides on God, although Muhammad's life teachings are used as a model and guide for all Muslims. .
In the Islamic religion, Muslims are to practice the Five Pillars. Muslims are to do their best to fulfill the Five Pillars because they are considered God's commandments. The first pillar is the Shahadah. The Shahadah consists in believing and professing the unity of God and the messengership of Muhammad: "There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God". The second pillar is the Salaat. The Salaat is the performance of a continual round of praying five times a day. The faithful are to perform ritual ablutions with water or sand/dirt if there isn't water, face Mecca, and recite a series of prayers and passages from the Qur'an, bowing and in knees.
