This fall, I had many opportunities to help out the community. Every year, a few classmates and myself go to the church to see who needs help. This year, I was helping an old man move into his new house and raking his yard. First, we started to move all of his stuff into his new house. Right away, there was someone complaining that his stuff was too heavy, and my classmates didn't want to carry that certain piece of furniture. We made it through and took a break. The old man got us donuts. After our break, we started to rake his yard. But his yard wasn't small at all. I would say there were about two acres that we had to rake. As you would figure there was more complaining. I had an idea, I ran back to my house and got the backpack blower (an engine driven device used to propel fallen leaves and other debris for removal, that you wore the engine on your back). Sure enough, I came back and everyone was sitting down and waiting for me. We got the backpack blower going and we then got done in a hurry. We thanked the man that we could do this fine deed for him, and he thanked us as well. .
Doing this for the old man meant to me that I was doing a good deed. He was happy it was getting done. While we were raking the yard, he was watching us from his back window in his home. I felt that he was imagining his own kids doing this when he was younger. My friends and I felt really good afterward. We just enjoyed the feeling of helping that old man. This experience, that I had, tells me about myself. When I do something for someone else, I get this warm feeling inside and I feel like I made an impact on someone. When someone needs help, I know I can find time for them. To make a difference.
If everyone would help someone on the spot, there would be a lot more joy and charity in the world. I know some people that work for the church and do this for a job. They seem really happy. I compare this to the talents story.
