Antoine de Saint-Exupery - The Little Prince

They expected him to act like a proper child so they chose not to indulge him in the passions of the early years of his life. The various people the Prince encountered when he visited different planets represent these grown-ups. The adults made Saint-Exupery feel lonely and that he lacked freedom of self-expression because of all their constraints, much like how the Prince felt lonely in spite of his numerous companions. In a way, the Prince also satisfied the authors did when he asked the narrator to draw him the picture of a sheep, which helped the narrator remember and relive his childhood aspiration of becoming a painter. The Prince also taught him a lot of things adults tend to forget when they grow up, and by retelling these life lessons the narrator was able to understand himself more. Another possible interpretation is that the Princes departure symbolized the authors letting go of his childhood, therefore choosing to follow his superego instead of his id.
The narrator, on the other hand, represents Saint-Exupery's superego. When the narrator chose to become a pilot instead of his childhood dream as a painter, he chose his superego over his id. Much like the narrator, Saint-Exupery was forced to grow up abruptly when his father and his brother died and he was left as the only male figure in their family. When the Prince asked the narrator about the significance of the four thorns on his roses, he was too focused on fixing his plane that instead of giving the Prince a straight answer he just told him the first thing that popped into his mind to shut him up. This could be interpreted as listening to his superego and doing what is expected instead of conversing with the Little Prince and going with his id. His adulthood could also be seen as the suppression of his id and instead following his morality principle. The narrator is also very much like the author of the novella because like the narrator, Saint-Exupery experienced a plane crash in the Sahara desert.
