Immigrants in America - 19th-20th Centuries

Immigrants went through great difficulties during the late 19th and early 20th to assimilate to American culture. They assimilated in different degrees and their culture and upbringing influenced how easily they assimilated. How ever some immigrants did not assimilate at all. .
Those that assimilated in a healthy way were immigrants that spoke english, used helpful organizations, and were open to understanding American culture on top of their own. Compared to others that assimilated in an unhealthy way, they still respected their religion and culture enough to not disregard it immediately. One source says, "French-Canadian has become a sufficiently good American to have given up his earlier programs of turning New England into a new France that is, into a Catholic province or of returning to the province of quebec." This quote states that at first they wanted to bring their French culture into America, but slowly found out that they couldn't succeed. They gave up on making New England their own France, but still kept their beliefs with them. At the same time they gained a better understanding of American culture, so they began to assimilate. .
Another healthy way immigrants took in American culture is through cooperation with American organizations and agencies that would help immigrants solve their problems. American organizations and agencies were there to support them so that immigrants will begin to understand the new culture, and slowly become self-reliant. Another source states that, "If we give them freedom to make their own connections between old and new experiences, we help them to find points of contact." This source explains the influence of these programs on the immigrant's understanding of the the American culture. .
The biggest reason why these immigrants could assimilate in a good way is because they knew how to speak english, so it wasn't as hard as it was on some of the other immigrants.
