Rangers

Will the New York Rangers four season playoff drought come to an end this season? I think so. The last four seasons the Rangers have found themselves out of the playoffs. They haven't put together the right players, coaching staff, and management to be a competitive team. The chemistry of a winning team also hasn't been there. I think with the new acquisitions they made this summer, and the new management and front office they have put together, the Rangers should have a good chance at making the playoffs and winning the Stanley Cup in 2001-2002.
In the last Four years I have watched a proud Rangers organization falter big time. Being that I am a huge Ranger fan and have been watching them since I was in the third grade, this has been very disappointing and frustrating. Neil Smith, who was the Rangers General Manager for 10 seasons, was fired last season for many good reasons. He dismantled a very respectable franchise into one that has not seen the playoffs in years. Getting rid of their captain Mark Messier, who led them to the Stanley Cup Championship in 1994, was the biggest mistake Smith ever made. After getting rid of Messier in 1997 the Rangers haven't made the playoffs since. The post Messier philosophy Smith had in mind was to bring in aging stars at the end of their career for huge amounts of money. Well it blew up in his face. It was as if the older players came here for the nice sum of money and didn't want to produce anything for the Rangers. I guess it served Smith right for dishing out huge sums of money to aging players. The coaching staffs he hired and the players that he acquired, besides the big money players, did not mesh well together. This was how much Neil Smith knew about the game of hockey and how to build a winner, yeah right. I don't think he had much hockey sense at all. Four seasons of not being in the playoffs doesn't sit well with a New York franchise.
