Scout, the daughter of Atticus Finch, experiences verbal harassment from her peers. Common remarks towards Atticus that others say to Scout are "n-gger lovers." This remark makes Scout very angry and hurts her feelings. This is constant throughout Maycomb County. Although Scout experiences verbal harassment from her school classmates she also experiences them from family members. An example of this is when Scout's cousin, Francis states the common remark of "n-gger lover" many times, eventually causing Scout to lose her temper. Although verbal harassment is an aspect of discrimination towards Scout, threats are now coming in to play. Bob Ewell, the man who accuses Tom Robinson, threatens Atticus and his family. He threatens them because to him Atticus was a disgrace for defending a black man and for embarrassing him. Bob Ewell says that he will "get him "even if it is the last thing that he does." He "gets him" "by going after the ones that Atticus cares most about. Physical harassment then begins when both Jem and Scout are put in danger one night in the dark woods. Bob Ewell attempts to murder both Jem and Scout. Bob Ewell makes Jem unconscious but that is the most he can do because Boo Radley comes in and saves the children. Due to the fact that Atticus accepts the case Bob Ewell attacks the children so that he hurts Atticus the most he possibly can.
Similarly, in TTK Jake Brigance also defends a black man. This makes his family and friends victims of racism. Comparable to Scout's situation, Jake's daughter Hannah Brigance also experiences verbal discrimination. The children at school call Hannah a ____ lover, "which is the same remark that goes towards Scout Finch. Carla Brigance, the wife of Jake Brigance states "Hannah comes home bawling because kids call her a n-gger lover "(Grisham, TTK). This shows the horrible verbal harassment towards Hannah merely because her father defends a black man.
