Sociology Paper - Inequality

Stereotypes, can't live with them can't live without them. Stereotypes are a big problem in our society. It puts labels about how a person should act or live according to their sex, race, personality, and other facts. The achievements of many people in our country have been devalued and ignored based on color, gender, and societal norms. African Americans in particular have been degraded and overlooked, when the term 'black people' is thought of, it is usually associated with a negative implication and image, affecting them through their whole life. In this paper, I will argue the impact of stereotypes that African Americans have to deal with through negative implications of media, attitudes and perceptions of individuals, and impact of environment.
             Description of Pictures.
When the term 'black people' was searched onto Google images, the majority of the images showed typical black stereotypes. About half of the pictures were "Memes", which were popular quotes, images, and real people, which are copied, imitated, and spread all over the internet. More than half the pictures were memes that presented comments from celebrities. For example Rick Scott Governor of Florida, under the caption, stated "Black People I'm like you, I grew up in public housing, and my dad had a sixth-grade education." Another meme was based on the show "Do You Want to Be a Millionaire", where actor Kenan Thompson was the contestant and the question he was asked is "Which of these food items is not delicious?" And the possible answers are fried chicken, watermelon, corn bread, and Kool Aid. Another picture was one of the music sensation Miley Cyrus, and was meme of her dancing in one of her music videos, with a part of the song being captioned under it. Other bulk of the memes were phrases and actions in that sort of way. The expressions depicted were of people who were smiling for the most part, but there was a hand full of stern faces in the pictures, and others were just blank expressions.
