War, Trauma and Family

There is no doubt that war affects the families of veterans in many different ways, but one of the most prominent and noticeable effect is how the family and friends of those involved in the warfare react to having a loved one involved. The effects and consequences of war are not only on the battlefield, but also far-reaching and extensive. The families of those in war are emotionally affected by war just as much as those actually in the war. War can affect a person by making them feel more irritable and have a lack of motivation, which also affects the family by making them to be less responsive due to stress and by making them more distant toward one another. In reading Suzan Lori-Parks' 2006 drama, "Father Comes Home from the Wars", you get to see how the families and friends change and in some instances torn apart completely. E. James Liebermans journal, American Families and the Vietnam War tells us in many different situations how war effects not only the soldiers, but their families. Watkins, Darlene. "Back in the USA" also tells us how stressful it can be returning home from wars.
War has a tendency to control people lives and push them till they are hanging by just a thread of sanity. In reading Suzan Lori Parks drama, we can see that she wanted us to understand some of the many situations that trouble veterans that come back from war. Each part of her drama tries to portray a different, and yet unexpected, situation that are mostly awkward and dark to understand. In each part, it normally is a situation between the man that just came back from the war and his wife. Not only can we see that the returned veteran is depressed, but we can also see that instead of rejoicing, the return of the veteran is rather seen as a tragedy.
Many people become angry when they feel threatened, harmed, or powerless. In the case of returned veterans, they may feel this type of irritability because of the fact that they may seem powerless or because of the traumatic events in the past, such as combat, physical or sexual abuse, injury, or the loss of a buddy from their unit.
