Service Experience - Cultural Competence

            In the social work practice and in society for business and social worlds cultural competence is needed to be successful. For me the three parts of cultural competence that I think are most important as a person is to be aware of one's own cultural worldview and attitude toward people, to have knowledge of different culture practices and worldviews, and lastly to have skills to interact to different cultures. The first part of this definition is important to be aware of yourself and your attitudes toward other cultures, because if you are not aware of yourself then there is no way you can reach an understanding of another culture unless you know what you think and how you act toward other cultures. I think of this part of the definition in the fact that you have to be able to understand yourself before anyone else can understand you. Well this is similar with culture. You have to understand what you think about other cultures and know your actions toward other cultures before you understand them. The next part of the definition is to have the knowledge of other cultures and practices, this is because many times bias and stereotypes can skew the way someone thinks of a culture. .
             It is important to understand and have different types of knowledge so as a person you are fully informed on the different cultures and worldviews around you. Often in class we talked about how we judge people off of the stereotypes that we have around them. If we base what we think of cultures on stereotypes we only have a single story of who they are. This is why is it very important to have a knowledge and worldview of other cultures because without this we are stuck in a single story where we do not understand the cultures around us. Lastly, having the skills to interact with different cultures is important because if you have all this knowledge but you do not know how to apply it to the situations you are in when you are interacting with other cultures you will still come across as incompetent.
