Imperialism and the Manifest Destiny

During the 19th century starting from the year 1840, a new concept was brought amongst the American people known as the Manifest Destiny, which was the belief that American settlers were destined to expand throughout the continent. Although many Americans believe that the Manifest Destiny was an aggressive imperialism and harmful to many people, however this movement should be viewed more as a progressive movement for the nation. The Manifest Destiny bettered the nation by first expanding its territory further to create a stronger nation. Secondly, this movement helped create/shape the American identity. Lastly, this movement helped cultivate the nationalism and beliefs of society to others bringing popularity and power to the United States. .
The Manifest Destiny could be viewed in various perspectives such as one of a progressive movement. According to Congress resolution to annex Texas in 1845 (Document C) it states "may be erected into a new state, to be called the State of Texas, with a republican form of government, to be adopters by the people of said republic" which is not only making Texas part of the United States it is also providing some self government and ease in said state. By making Texas a part of the United States after the taking the land from Mexico, the U.S was able to expand its territories and boundaries to create a stronger union due to the fact that Texas is one of the United States biggest state current day. The Manifest Destiny could also be seen as a progressive movement for the nation according to John L. O'Sullivan on Manifest Destiny in 1839 (Document A) stating "national birth was the beginning of a new history, the formation and progress of an untried political system, which separates us from the past and connects us with the future only we may confidently assume that our country is destined to be the great nation of futurity.
