ISIS - Becoming Global Terrorism

In the New York Times article, "ISIS Displaying a Deft Command of Varied Media," the popular journalist Scott Shane states, "ISIS, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, is using every contemporary mode of messaging to recruit fighters, intimidate enemies and promote its claim to have established a caliphate, a unified Muslim state run according to a strict interpretation of Islamic law. If its bigotry and beheadings seem to come from a distant century, its use of media is up to the moment" (Shane, 2). Also, according to the same article, ISIS shared a one-hour documentary that demonstrates what their mission is, their weapons and their violent attacks and bombings against whoever opposes them. This documentary also has special sound and picture effects, which make the documentary look and sound more like an American action movie. ISIS uses media like how the rest of the world is using it in order to grab people's attention and to spark their interest in recruiting. Furthermore, "ISIS is online jihad 3. Dozens of Twitter accounts spread its message, and it has posted some major speeches in seven languages. When its accounts are blocked, new ones appear immediately. It also uses services like JustPaste to publish battle summaries, SoundCloud to release audio reports, Instagram to share images and WhatsApp to spread graphics and videos" (Shane, 13). ISIS reach further levels of technology in social media, not only are they posting videos to convince people to join, but they are also creating accounts on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and many other social websites and phone applications in order to reach out to as many people as possible around the world.
ISIS usually always reply to these questions with "kik me" according to Shane. Kik is an application on smartphones where people can send instant messages to each other; which is very similar to texting.
