The First Televised Presidential Debate


            
             During the 1960s, the cold war tension was at its zenith. The Soviet Union and United State's space race was at its pinnacle; one of the most significant wars during the Cold War, the Korean War was finally reached its end; both nations were equipped with devastating atomic bombs. But at the same time, the 1960s was significant, especially for the Americans, for another reason. In the midst of this great tension, the United States went through a shift in presidency. Quite obviously, the presidential debate of the 1960s between John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon was predominated by the rising tension of the Cold War. The candidate plans of the two presidential candidates were equally pleasing, but what determined Kennedy's victory was the effect of the first televised presidential debate.
             The Cold War.
             The Space Race.
             As the tension of Cold War started to amplify, since in the late 1950s, space became one of the most prominent subjects of the two nations' competition. Both Soviet Union and United States sought to show their prowess in their technological advancement, especially under the subject of military and war. On October 4, 1957, a Soviet R-7 intercontinental ballistic missile launched Sputnik, which was the world's first satellite to be placed into the Earth's orbit.1 Sputnik was also believed to be capable of launching nuclear missiles to the U.S. territory from the orbit. Quite obviously, the launching of Sputnik was quite a shock to the Americans since their supremacy of technology over Soviet Union was disgruntled. .
             To level out the competition, in 1958, the U.S. launched its own satellite, Explorer I. Also in 1958, President Eisenhower ordered to create the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a federal agency dedicated to space exploration. Furthermore, President Eisenhower also created two programs that will assist NASA with the space race. The first, a specialized section of the U.
