Definitions of Race and Ethnicity

Races are to be distinguished by skin color, facial type, etc. However, the scientific bases of racial distinctions are weak. Scientific studies show that racial genetic differences are weak except in skin color.              2. With political and economic dominance it allows the dominant group to acquire a disproportionate part of society's wealth and have maximum control of all institutions. Not all people in the dominant group are equal to each other, but only members of the dominant ethnic group disproportionately enjoy the different privileges. White Anglo-Saxon Protestants are part of the decision-making elites of the government, given the reason they remain the dominant ethnic group. These Anglo Americans own a greater share of the society's wealth, earn more income, acquire better educations, have higher ranking jobs, and attain more of the society's resources (Marger 32-33). Anglo Saxon Americans norms and values dominate within a society; the cultural characteristics of the dominant group become the society's standards. These standards would consist of historical language, traditions, customs, ideology, and the law enforces all these standards. Ethnic groups are expected to acculturate to the dominant group's customs and ideals. Those who don't abide by these standards will remain outside the societal main stream and in contempt with the law. So it is assumed that everyone in the society will at least speak English, maintain Judeo-Christian ethics, hold onto democratic principles and have some understanding of capitalist's values. It is truly hard to change society as a whole, it would be so much controversy and conflict when others ideas conflict with dominant groups such as the Anglo Saxon Protestants (Marger 33).
