Persuasive Proposal - Self Defense

The tips may be good but they fall short to guarantee a student's safety. .
Something many of us may not know is that, statistically, most attacks are domestic attacks. Meaning, it is family, friends, or ex-lovers that turn around, and become violent. Akron was one of the few that instead of the violent crime rates going down they went up (Rape Crises Center n.p.). It is one of the worst things ever, giving your entire trust to someone and them turning around and becoming the one you fear. When someone is violently attacked by someone they love it is less likely for them to report it. When you know how to defend yourself, you gain confidence. It becomes a natural response to act defensively if necessary. When otherwise, some people would hesitate to immediately defend themselves this way, you don't even think about it, your body will automatically defend itself for you. While Akron is a thriving and exciting place to live and attend college Akron's overall crime rates continue to be higher than not only Ohio but the U.S. all together (AreaVibes n.p.). Crime in Akron is not going to be going anywhere any time soon; it is important for people to act now, before they are personally affected by a violent crime.
The University has many resources but they could make it mandatory for everyone to take the basic self-defense class in order to ensure their students to be safer. We could also create more clubs such as a safety awareness club where groups of students could get together, and brainstorm ways to make campus safer. That may also create a sort of community of students that other students could contact if they need a walking buddy at night. That type of club could raise awareness to other students about the importance of self-defense, as well as possibly holding open meetings to discuss what is making the students feel unsafe, and what they wish could happen to fix that. Students may be more comfortable with talking to other students with the same concerns, and these students would know who to contact and how to help students build their own bridge to their personal safety.
