Themes of Belonging in Music, Literature and Film

The rhyme used in the song is screamed by the rock singer with volume, and adds to the theme of desperation in searching to belong. The words "I wanna let go of the pain I've felt so long" and "I wanna find something I've wanted all along, somewhere I belong," show the only real way pain and confusion can be swept aside is through the acquisition of a sense of belonging. .
Alienation and feelings of foreignness emphasise how uncomfortable it is to not belong, and these feelings are shown throughout many of Peter Skrzynecki's texts. In Feliks Skrzynecki, the author talks about his father's love for his place of origin, Poland. The garden in which the father "swept its paths ten times around the world," which is a hyperbole for how much he is connected to it, is his sanctuary in which he can bring Poland to where he is, and feel like he belongs. Using the simile "Loved his garden like an only child" also creates an emotive connection between his father and the garden. The author tells us that Feliks Skrzynecki does not conform to the standards and views of society, and chooses to belong how he wants to – by feeling as if he is back in his homeland: "Kept pace only with the Joneses of his own mind's making." The father does not need to belong to anyone but he and his homeland, and feeling of foreignness are erased as he feels at home in his garden. .
In Migrant Hostel, third person voicing is utilized to let the feelings of him and all the other migrants to be expressed, showing us how alienated they feel in this new land and how they feel "left out." To gain a sense of belonging, the migrants "sought each other out instinctively," like lone animals who want companions to feel comfort and strength. The similes "like a homing pigeon/circling to get its bearings" and "like birds of passage" are used to heavily express how lost the migrants feel, as they circle around and wander confused, grasping for a hope of familiarity that does not exist in this new country.
