Women and Millennium Development Goals


            The Millennium Development Goals are eight goals with realistic targets and clear deadlines for improving the lives of the world's poorest people. To meet these goals and eradicate poverty, leaders of 189 countries signed the historic Millennium Declaration (MD) at the United Nations Millennium Summit which occurred in 2000. Each goal has specific targets and dates for achieving those targets to accelerate progress and any reduction of poverty is also considered a success. These goals are being assessed by indicators to show the progress towards the goals through the indicators of enrollment in education for girls, health stability and the involvement in the community such as having a voice. The Countries I will be focusing on will be Nigeria, Ethiopia and India and assessing the progress towards reaching these goals. .
             Education enrollment, health stability and the involvement in communities measure influence the empowerment of women and in order to achieve that finance minsters had to step in and . The G8 finance ministers agreed in June 2005 to provide enough funds to the World Bank, this allowed the finance ministers to cancel out the ever growing debt owed by the members of the heavily indebted poor countries to allow them to redirect resources through programs that would improve the health and education system or in fact to induce the importance of these ideas, also for alleviating poverty.To promote the importance of education is the basis of empowering women. Not only does it benefit the economic aspect of the country but it would also create the foundation of more independent, self reliant, healthier women. The millennium girl development is targeted to eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by 2014, and in all levels of education, by 2015. By achieving these goals we can expect more empowered women who are independent and invigorated to achieve to their maximum "human ability.
