             Two outcomes may arise from children being allowed to make their decisions independently. They may make good decisions with successful results and this may be a good stimulus as they would be driven to continue to choose healthy decisions. Also, children may take undesirable routes which may encourage them to turn back to the authority of their parents. A parent needs to use discernment when allowing a child to make decisions that affect their emotional and mental well being. Sometimes situations do not have long term consequences and could help in practicing decision making and therefore, this would be a good time to grant the child an opportunity to choose. This is the fine line in the emotional and mental tug of war. Sometimes parents may not always be aware or know the needs of their children. There is a large generation gap between children and parents children today, which causes contrasting priorities about certain issues. Parents have to listen to their children because a lot of the time the child wants attention,validation, and acceptance from their parents. Finding time to spend with their kids would allow for the parents to get to know their kids on a deeper level and discover the unsurfaced emotions. .
             The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration reports a method on how to engage in a healthy relationship, "which highlight the importance of spending time with family to foster communication, provide positive reinforcement, role model, teach social skills, and to bond." In order to be an effective parent it has been proven through their research it is essential to build a foundation and spend quality time to have a meaningful relationship with your kids.
