Miss Emily in A Rose For Emily

The events that occur in Miss Emily's life play a key role as to why she is considered a "monument" in the short story, "A Rose For Emily," by William Faulkner. Faulkner illustrates that Miss Emily's desire to control her life causes her to deny the passing of time. Many events in her life have caused her to have a hard time dealing with change over time. The death of her father, meeting Homer Barron, and finding herself all had a life changing impact of how she accepted the passing of time.
Miss Emily was a tradition and people thought very highly of her in her town. After the loss of her father, she was not able to accept the fact that he was dead. She learned to find comfort in living under someone else and that feeling was lost after her father passed. Without her father, Emily has to be on her own. Not only does she have to begin making her own decisions but she will also have to learn how to not live under the control of her father. After such a traumatic event, one may undergo some personality changes and/or go though some type of phase. "After her father's death she went out very little; after her sweetheart went away, people hardy saw her at all" (Faulkner 33). Miss Emily can be described as a "monument" in this story because of her inability to handle the loss of control her father had over her after he died.
Miss Emily has a hard time taking control of the tribulations in her life. It started with the death of her father and with Homer Barron. .
Homer had been seen out very frequently with Miss Emily after the passing of her father. This was the first time Miss Emily had been out since the tragedy, and her relationship with the lower-class Yankee becomes the talk of the town. "When she had first begun to be seen with Homer Barron, we had said, "She will marry him" (35). Even though things started to look up for her there was one thing keeping her away from full happiness.
