The Chrysalids by John Wyndham

Imagine living in a community where you have to hide your identity from everyone because being different can put you in danger, and there is a person who would do anything to purify it's community. In the book "The Chrysalids," by John Wyndham, many characters have to hide their true identity from the community of Waknuk because they are different and many of them try to banish mutants. These mutants are considered to be deviant for the reason of not fitting the description of a human according to biblical concepts. In the Waknuk community, the description of being normal is very important to the people of Waknuk. If one does not fit the description of what is normal, they are faced with danger or send to another community. Prejudice exists in Waknuk as evident through the lives of mutants such as David Strom, Sophie Wender and Joseph Strom, who follows the laws and religious concepts very strictly. .
David who looks normal just like his family keeps such secret that his life could be threatened if one knows of it and lives a hard life. David is the son of Joseph Strom who is a religious leader of Waknuk and does not tolerate deviants. David and his eight other friends try to live a normal life "I-I'm frightened, Uncle Axel. What'll they do when they find out I'm different?" David and his other friends could communicate telepathically. Though this unique talent is not seen physically, the group is still different from everyone else in Waknuk if compared to the true image of God. In fact, in the society of Waknuk only David could communicate and send thought shapes to his other eight friends through their minds. If one finds out this secret, they are sent to the Fringe community. For instance, David's father who truly despises mutants, Joseph asks David what is a mutant? David replies "A thing accursed in the sight of God and man." In another case, when David got a splinter in his hand, David says that if he had another arm he could easily wrap the bandage around his hand.
