Try living in a community where you have to hide, you have to hide yourself because you know it will cause you, your life. One day David went of to the high banks a where he discover Sophie Wender. He soon finds out that Sophie has six toes she is deviant. Mrs. Wender, Sophie's mother asks David if he could, "Will you keep a secret - an important secret - for her sake?". David knows that if anyone found out about Sophie she could be possibly be killed or driven out of Waknuk and into the Fringes. The Fringes is where all deviation live, it is in the edge of Waknuk. The community of Fringe has scarce amount of food because of the soil and contaminated environment. As a result, when Allan found out about Sophie, Allan was more than happy to tell everyone about her. Mrs. Wender knows that eventually the Waknuk people would come after Sophie and kill her, "if anyone were to find out, they'd-they'd be terribly unkind to her. We've gone to see that never happens." Eventually Sophie was forced to live in the Fringe community. In Waknuk, deviants know they cannot survive in a cruel place. Sophie is one of them, she and her family hides in the forest they do not want anyone to know about Sophie. .
In the community of Waknuk, they regularly undergo inspection to destroy deviants in their yards. Especially in the Strom household, specifically Joseph Strom as has been noted is a religious leader and the father of David Strom.
