The Problem of Human Trafficking

Imagine living a normal life one day, being safe and at home with no problems at all and then the next being taken from regular life and sold into sex slavery with no control over anything. This is happening right now, everywhere in the world and most people are clueless about it. The Trafficking Protocol states that human trafficking is defined as "The recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons by the means of the threat or use of coercion of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of giving or receiving payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation" (Yea 2.) Human Trafficking is a huge problem not only in the United States, but internationally too. More people should be informed on how big of a problem human trafficking is, where it is taking place at, and what people can do to eliminate it.
Human Trafficking is one of the largest businesses in the world. According to research "Human Sex Trafficking is the fastest-growing business of organized crime and the third-largest criminal enterprise in the world" (Kulmala). It is one of the major issues throughout the world. This industry is even a problem in the United States, but many people are unaware of the problem. It is stated that "A 2006 U.S. State Department report said 14,500 to 17,500 people are trafficked into the United States annually" (Kulmala). Many people wouldn't even know that Human Trafficking is happening in their own towns and cities. There are thousands of innocent people who are affected by this problem whether they chose to be or not. It is reported that "Despite more than a dozen international conventions banning slavery in the past 150 years, there are more slaves today than at any point in human history" (Skinner). So no matter if people are aware of this huge issue or not, it is happening everywhere and is worse than ever.
