Allegory of the Cave and The Truman Show

Both are tricked into believing that what they saw and heard in the cave and in Sea Haven was the true reality that exists. Each slave, the one from the cave and Truman, discover at the end that what had they both have been presented with their entire life is only reflections and shadows of the truth. Both main characters showed that in knowledge there is freedom instead of enslavement. Chrystoff, the puppeteer in the Truman show, says in the movie that "We accept the reality of the world with which we are presented" (Niccol 1998). This is very similar to Plato's description of the chained prisoners when he says, "such men would believe the truth to be nothing else than the shadows of the artifacts" (Plato 246). .
The Truman show presents another essential distortive reality in regards to media incorporation that surrounds us with illusion and lies like the puppet masters controlling the shadows in the cave.  Both play crucial roles in shaping the prisoners view of the world. The shadows serve for the prisoner's false and distorted sense of reality but also kept them in control. Another similarity also demonstrates man's yearning beyond the self for completion and search answer into the philosophical question "who am I?" and what am I here for?  In the cave once the slave becomes free he begins his search for enlightenment and see the world for what it truly is for the first time. In the Truman show Truman feels incomplete and is haunted from memories of his past and is constantly questioning his existence.  His is frequently looking up to the sky for answers as if he almost knew that something else exists that is out of his control.  The Truman show is about deceiving appearances, absolute control and a search for truth which is the major themes in philosophy.  Truman can be seen as representation of humankind and our struggle to know the truth in our relationships of our creator.
