Discovering My Epilepsy

The quote, "expect the unexpected because life is full of surprises. Things that you can't prevent from happening because they're meant to happen, but instead of running away from it, you should embrace it, solve it and learn from it" is very relevant in my life. Life is full of twists and turns, you never know what is going to come around the next corner. It is full of unexpected moments and surprising occurrences you never thought would happen. There are instances and situations that seem bad but turn out to be good in the end and can have a profound impact on your future. That is exactly what happened to me junior year. One day I learned the real truth about what was happening to me. It was October of junior year that my mom brought me to the doctors to where I was diagnosed with absence seizures. I thought how could this be? I've gone 16 years of my life not knowing anything was wrong with me, including my family and friends, so how am I sitting in a doctor's office looking at a computer with my brain waves on it and being told I have seizures? When people hear of seizures they think of someone on the ground shaking violently but there are many different types of seizures people can have. In my case absence seizures can be mistaken with daydreaming or a lapse in attention that last between 5 to 15 seconds. When the seizure is over, the person may not recall what just occurred and may go on with his/her activities, acting as though nothing happened. It was no wonder I almost finished high school not knowing about this crucial part of my health, when they only lasted for 5 seconds followed by a full recovery. They were so unnoticeable that I probably had several a day and no one would of known, including myself, even in conversation. .
My mom always noticed small strange behaviors from me, even as a baby. Small behaviors like closing my eyes a lot, stopping in motion and speaking and having to be snapped out of a daydream.
