The Chosen by Chaim Potok

In Chaim Potok's, "The Chosen," two unlikely friends meet each other at a baseball game and become the best of friends. As the novel progresses, the story is about the friendship that evolves between Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders when Reuven has an injury and is in the hospital. Reuven goes to the hospital because Danny hit a baseball at his eye and while he is at the hospital, he listens to the radio about what is happening at Normandy. That is where the conflict between Danny and Reuven juxtaposes the invasion of Normandy. Both Reuven's friendship and D-Day are similar in nature because they both start as violent incidents but lead to a rather important change of events.
D-Day took place off the coast of France in 1944 during World War II. The battle of Normandy, also called D-Day, consisted of the allies fighting off the Nazis at France. At the end of the day, the twelve nations on the allies' side held triumphed over the Germans pushing them out of France. That was quite a significant day because it was the turning point of World War II. After Reuven gets hit with the ball, he goes to the hospital and stays there because he is temporarily blind. During his time there, he listens to the radio about what is happening at D-Day with the other people waiting for various surgeries. Also while Reuven is at the hospital, Danny comes to visit Reuven and apologizes for his actions, but Reuven refuses to forgive Danny and he dismisses him with hatred and disgust. He explains this to his father but David Malter talks Reuven into forgiving Danny because he believes that a strong friendship will result out of this predicament. Since then, their friendship grows and so does the situation at Normandy. The allies are very persistent and so is Reuven; even though he knows there is only a small chance he would be able to see again, he stays strong and believes that everything will be all right.
