The General in His Labyrinth


The General's stated goal is his departure from Colombia to Europe. He leaves with his faithful servant and confidant, José Palacios, and a small retinue of loyal officials and friends. As he departs he reminds the current Vice-President-elect that he has yet to receive his passport.
             As The General's party travels North towards the coast the evidence of his loss of power is evident in both his treatment and as manifested by his physical detrition. He is unrecognizable to his people and ultimately, to himself. .
             Arriving in the town of Honda his party is greeted by three days of parties. He also meets a former lover, Miranda Lindsay, who saved his life fifteen years previously. She becomes the first of several fictional women whom Márquez will insert into the story line in order to allow the reader to relive significant events of The General's life. .
             Arriving in Turbaco, the party finds itself delayed indefinitely because there are no ships bound for Europe and The General's missing passport has yet to arrive. Here he receives a series of visitors including General O'Leary who informs him of the ongoing political struggles at the Capitol. The General remember that his "dream began to fall apart on the very day it was realized (Márquez 153).".
             In June The General's long awaited passport finally arrives. At about the same time he learns his pension granted by the Congress was confirmed. Tellingly, within a few lines we hear The General say "We are rich We are Free We are Sad (Márquez 167)." His party continues to the coast when he learns that his good friend and desired successor Field Marshal Sucre has been assassinated. In Bogotá another friend, General Urdaneta has seized power and there are rumors of support for a return to power. Despite this The General's health continues to decline and both figuratively and literally he continues to become smaller with each passing day.
